How much does a fence cost per foot in San Diego?
HomeGuide's national installed ranges are about $20 to $50 per linear foot for wood, $30 to $60 for vinyl, $10 to $40 for chain link, $25 to $75 for aluminum, and $60 to $240 for block walls. Our calculator runs a bit higher for wood to reflect San Diego labor.
Does my neighbor have to pay for half the fence in California?
California Civil Code section 841 presumes neighbors share equal responsibility for a reasonable boundary fence. To ask for a share, you give written notice at least 30 days before the work with the details the law lists. Our free neighbor fence letter tool drafts that notice for you.
Chain link is usually the cheapest, at about $10 to $40 per foot installed per HomeGuide. Wood privacy fencing is the most common middle option, while vinyl costs more upfront but needs less upkeep. Gates, slope, rocky soil, and old fence removal add cost to any material.

Your rights when hiring a contractor in California
Does my contractor need a California license?
Yes, if the job (labor plus materials) is $1,000 or more. California raised the minor-work exemption from $500 to $1,000 on Jan 1, 2025 (AB 2622; Bus. & Prof. Code 7048). Check any license free at cslb.ca.gov.
How big a down payment can a contractor ask for?
For home improvement contracts, no more than 10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less (Bus. & Prof. Code 7159). A bigger upfront demand is a red flag.
Can I cancel a home improvement contract after signing?
Generally yes: California gives a 3-business-day right to cancel most home improvement contracts signed at your home, and the contract must include the cancellation notice (Bus. & Prof. Code 7159; Civil Code 1689.5–1689.7).
